Alisher Navoiy (1441–1501) was a great Uzbek poet, thinker, and statesman. Born in Herat, he wrote in the Chagatai Turkic language and demonstrated that Turkic could rival Persian in poetic expression. His collected lyric corpus Khazoyin ul-maoniy and his Khamsa (Quintet) epics are considered a summit of classical literature.
